Wall Street Journal: A Navy SEAL’s Survival Handbook Takes Off

For those traveling abroad without weapons or body armor, ‘100 Deadly Skills’ gives tips on surviving the worst

It’s hard to tell if Clint Emerson’s survival handbook, “100 Deadly Skills,” is meant to be sincere or tongue-in-cheek. The retired Navy SEAL provides instructions for hot-wiring a plane, disposing of a corpse with jet fuel, and making body armor from books and duct tape.

In truth, the book is a bit of both. And that appeal as a novelty gift and a practical guide to the apocalypse has made it a stealth success story. Since its release in October, the book has gone through 10 printings, totaling more than 200,000 copies in print and e-book. This fall, publisher Touchstone plans to issue a sequel, “100 Deadly Skills: Survival Edition,” with a first print run of 100,000.
